New for 2013
- Asparagus Bean, Red-Podded
-
Vigna unguiculata ssp. sesquipedalis; Certified Organic
NEW FOR 2013! (70-75 days) Aka Yard-Long Bean, Chinese Longbean. This visually stunning bean produces long, deep-red pods up to 20" long that dangle from 10' vines. Originating in southern Asia, where it is still an important vegetable, it has been grown in North America since the late 1700's. The vines are known for their productivity: one sowing at the beginning of the season will produce abundantly until frost. Easy to grow, it is extremely heat-tolerant and, as a legume, enriches any soil it grows in by fixing nitrogen in the soil. The delicious pods are excellent in stir-fries, soups, sautes or steamed. Leave some pods on the vine to dry and you also have a good dried bean for winter stews and soups.

- Beurre de Rocquencourt Bean
-
Wax Bean; Endangered; Certified Organic
SORRY, SOLD OUT. (Snap Wax,Dry, Bush)(55 days) We grew this extremely rare bean for years and loved it for its incredible productivity and buttery taste (its name translates as "Butter from Rocquencourt"). Then in one bad season we lost most of our crop. It's taken us awhile, but we finally have enough stock to offer again. Named for the town of Rocquencourt, France which was known for its fine vegetables, it was a local French heirloom that became a recognized commercial variety in the 1930's. According to William Woys Weaver, it can grow in sun or partial shade and the dried beans make excellent soup or refried beans (unusual for a wax bean). It produces large quantities of slender, stringless yellow pods with black seeds.
