Eggplant

  1. A Description of Eggplant

History: Eggplants originated in India and have been grown there for thousands of years. After spreading to Africa and Europe, they were introduced to England in 1596. They were not hugely popular in that country because the climate was not conducive to growing them. Cultivation: eggplants are slow growers and heat-lovers, meaning that they need to be started early indoors to produce fruit. Sow seed 1/4" deep in soil-less mix, 7-8 weeks before the last frost. Harden off & transplant to a warm, protected, sunny location, when soil has warmed, 12" apart. Companions: beans encourage growth and deter the potato beetle; thyme & marigold deter pests.

  2. Certified Organic
    Black Beauty Eggplant

    Certified Organic

(75- 90 days) Introduced from Europe in 1910, this variety lives up to its name! Deep purple, 3 lb. fruits have wonderful flavour and store well. This plant will produce 8-10 fruits per plant if picked regularly.

  3. Certified Organic
    Little Fingers Eggplant

    Certified Organic

(70 days) This delightful eggplant produces an abundant amount of slim, dark purple fruit in clusters of three or more. They can be harvested when no longer than your little finger (hence the name) or they can be left to grow to 6-8" with no sacrifice in taste. These are great for stir-frying or grilling.

  4. Certified Organic
    Long Purple Eggplant

    Certified Organic

(80 days) Introduced in 1855 and grown in Canada since at least 1878, this eggplant was prized for its hardiness, early maturity and productivity. Long and slender (2" by 10"), with a bulbous end, the fruit is best harvested when young. Its thin skin and few seeds make it great for slicing and cooking.

  5. Certified Organic
    Rosa Bianca Eggplant

    Certified Organic

(75 days) A beautiful Italian heirloom, this variety produces rounded, lavender/white fruit that is very meaty with a nice mild flavour and no bitterness. Pick when 6-8".
